The Tunisian coast guard announced today, Friday, that it has recovered 20 bodies off the coast of the eastern city of Sfax, after a boat carrying 40 migrants who were on their way to the coast of Europe sank.
The Tunisian authorities confirmed that three migrants were rescued, while 17 others are still missing.
The spokesman for the Maritime Guard in the governorates of Sfax and Mahdia, Ali Ayari, said in a statement to Agence France-Presse that the bodies belonged to “11 men, 8 women and an infant, who were recovered off the coast of Sfax on Thursday (yesterday)”, and they were transferred to the local hospital in the governorate.
He pointed out that the search for missing persons had stopped due to bad weather on Friday, to be resumed tomorrow, Saturday.
According to the Tunisian official, the immigrants of African origin, from sub-Saharan countries, set off on the boat from the coast of Sidi Mansour on Thursday at dawn, towards the European coasts.
At least 14 immigrants died on the 9th of last March after two boats sank off the coast of Sfax, while they were trying to sail towards the coast of Italy.
The rates of irregular migration through Tunisia increased, since the January 2011 revolution, taking advantage of the lack of security at the time, but quickly decreased after the authorities tightened the screws on illegal immigration networks.
But over the past year, the Tunisian coast of Sfax has returned as a major point of departure towards the coast of Italy in boats crowded with migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, seeking a better life in Europe.
It is noteworthy that, according to United Nations statistics, at least 292 immigrants have died since January 2021 in the Mediterranean until the end of last March, while last year nearly 1,200 migrants died in the Mediterranean.
